Identity V

Editor's Review
Identity V is a trailblazer in the multiplayer-horror gaming space, continuously innovating, setting trends and influencing the asymmetrical survival gaming genre. Developed by NetEase Games and released worldwide in 2018, this free-to-play game took the world by storm with its blend of gothic horror, tactical gameplay, and deeply engaging narrative. Identity V draws players in with its unique art style, complex character designs, and heart-pounding matches to create a terrifying experience that is as beautiful as it is heart-stopping. The strength of the game comes from not just the addicting mechanics but rather its ability to ratchet the stakes up with a compelling narrative that returns players to the fray.
One of the most impressive aspects of Identity V is its ever-expanding lineup of characters, each with their own unique abilities and background lore. The Survivors come in a variety of flavours, from the nimble and slippery “Thief” to the mechanically-inclined “Mechanic,"" who can direct a remote doll to help out dastardly decoding. The “Coordinator,” a former police officer, carries a flare gun to stun a Hunter, and the “Priestess” has the ability to open portals to jump across the map in the latter case. The distinctive skills of each Survivor push players to try out new team compositions and strategies, offering layers upon layers of depth to every match.
Another hit feature is the art style of the game, a Tim Burton-esque fusion of whimsy with macabre elegance. The characters are lovingly designed, with cartoony proportions and intricate costumes as telling of their personalities and backstories as their dialogue. Designed to be terrifying and unnervingly captivating, the Hunters especially hide tragic stories of betrayal, madness and despair behind their grotesque exteriors. This is true of the visual storytelling in the game's menus and loading screens as well; each is filled with clues and snippets of lore that drop hints on the broader mystery of the “Oletus Manor,” the nefarious location that serves as the backdrop for the deadly games.
Identity V also has a vibrant competitive scene, with ranked matches that challenge the most skilled Survivors and Hunters against each other in high-octane combat. Just getting to the next tier takes more than just mechanical skill, but also a significant amount of game knowledge, map awareness and the ability to adapt to constantly changing strategies. Regular updates further balance the game, preventing any character or strategy from lingering at the top of the meta for too long. If you want something either more relaxed or more poweful, you can always play custom matches with events that let you experiment with crazy playstyles or just play with your friends.
What separates Identity V is its addictive and atmospheric lore. The narrative of the game unfolds through diary entries, character backstories, and special events, all of which contribute to making this world one where nothing is ever as it seems. The place in which the matches are held, Oletus Manor, is not a mere setting, of course; it is a character of its own, a space where the border between reality and nightmare gets hazy and stretched. As players slowly explore the secrets behind the manor and its mysterious owner — as well as the tragic fates that tie together the Survivors and Hunters. This narrative style elevates Identity V from mere multiplayer match into the realm of experience where curiosity and exploration are rewarded.
Unlike many games in its genre, Identity V proves that both innovation and artistry can develop creative titles within a niche. It is a game that balance skill and creativity, every single match is a unique story of survival, betrayal and desperation. In this war of cat and mouse, with you as either a single Survivor looking to avoid the Hunter, or the Hunter out there to track down your quarry, Identity V gives a pulse-pounding experience such as nothing else.
