Editor's Review
Backpack Battles is a PvP auto-battler game that combines classic Tetris-style inventory management and tactical auto-battle combat in one unique package from developer PlayWithFurcifer. Originally released to the public in Early Access format, it finally had a proper launch from June 2025 after an exceptionally well-received release train — with deep puzzle-like mechanics and asynchronous multiplayer appealing very much to strategy fans.
This two-phase clash between you and the monsters takes place over a sequence of rounds. Players can pick from a variety of classes at the beginning, each with different qualities—like the melee-oriented Berserker, or ranged fire-based Pyromancer; quick-footed Ranger, and so on. At the start of every round, there is a Shopping Phase in which players get gold to buy items from a shop that gets randomized. They include everything from weapons, armor and potions to oddball companions (such as the healing "Goobert") and crafting materials. Players can even purchase more sacks, aka extra grid slots for their backpack. The main twist is that the objects come in shapes and sizes; so players must drag them around to match their form into an efficient backpack grid as it woefully fills up.
The difference on which Backpack Battles rests is the utmost place of items. What good is having the most powerful gear if all you do with it is arrange items in your inventory? Strong buffs are often activated by placing adjacent items, for example food next to a Frying Pan increases its damage or mana orb close enough to staves gives you spellcasting speed. The game also introduces a new fusion/crafting system: leave particular component items (a Hero Sword next to two Whetstones, for example) adjacent in your backpack after one phase of battle and they will automatically fuse into a more powerful legendary item (in this instance the result is usually then discovered as a Hero Longsword) that lasts you across rounds.
The Battle Phase starts when the Preparing phase is over. Your hero automatically goes toe-to-toe with an asynchronous recording of another real player’s build from the same round—there is no live input here, and so you can take it at your own pace. Items trigger in order of their cooldowns and placement on the board — they will damage, poison or burn foes, shield your heroes with armor or even heal them. The aim is to drain the opponent's health before they can do so with yours.
To conclude, the game Backpack Battles includes a Casual mode which almost has no pressure and stress for you, then jump into the Ranked ladder climbing one step at a time by scoring 10 wins before 5 losses or custom Lobbies for playing synchronously with friends. Backpack Battles serves players a massive helping of strategic depth with over 500 unique items, multiple subclasses per hero and an ever changing meta driven by community discovery. Every round is a satisfying challenge of build-crafting creativity, as it rewards spatial puzzle-solving and economy management over reflexes.
